The Joys of Juicing Hempseed

A couple of days ago my fabulous new Green Power juicer arrived. We’ve been enjoying the fruits of its labour since. It had a very humorous DVD with it… not meant to be funny, of course, but the script was obviously translated from Korean and the presenter, in completely unaccented English, read it with all the “et ceteras” and various cultural idioms intact. We joked that our son Phil had taught him English (his job).

So, our day begins with our usual smoothie, except that now Conrad soaks a cup of organic hemp seeds the night before and in the morning makes hemp mylk in the new juicer. We add that to our berries and other fruit in the blender and whirr it up. Raw organic hemp is famously nutritious– actually considered by scientists to be the most complete source of nutrients on the planet. The seed is laden with 33 percent pure digestible protein and isa rich source of omega-3 and GLA. A Canadian government-funded report states that hemp protein is comprised of 66 percent high-quality edistin protein, and that hempseed contains the highest percentage of this of any plant source. Many of us have heard all the wonderful things about Flax, but, if you can believe it, Hemp contains three times the vitamin E found in flax. Unlike soy, hemp is not GM (genetically modified). Hemp was grown and used as a protein food in China long before soy was developed.

Yesterday Ed rode his bike to the top of a local ski resort mountain– actually rode up a 16 km incline to the top. He said that he is pretty sure that it was because he fueled himself with the morning smoothie that contained the hemp milk. Our son has quite a few stories of how people have experienced increased stamina and energy due to hempseed in their diet. How does it taste? It gives the smoothie a milky, slightly nutty flavour that goes very nicely with the blueberries and other fruits that you might add. You could also put in a two-ounce shot of our favorite high antioxidant juice. It boosts the fruity flavour of the smoothie– and our immune system is fired for the day.
