Tosh and Silliness

I had a nap this afternoon, which is a very silly thing to do... but I was tired, Judge... and as a result I am staying up way too late.. reminds me of my late mom (who passed last year at this time) who would get up in the middle of the night in her 70s and do all the sorts of things that 'normal folks' do during the daylight hours.

I had a good a profitable day, as far as my on-line work goes (was able to finish up a page for my website-- yay).  So I rewarded myself by reading a little tosh and silliness on the web.  For example, I really didn't know the whole Joni Mitchell-finds-her-longlost-daughter story.  Looks like I am only 11 years behind on THAT news lol.  Looks like they are now "estranged".  

Joni Mitchell has many sterling qualities but she smokes like a fiend and justifies the habit to the hilt.  I can hardly breathe just reading about her chain-smoking in her 60s.  My lungs are done-in by all that smoking up until I was 43.

Anyhow, I really must go to bed...

Raw EmOtIoNaL Health

Emotional illness develops when we have more fear than knowledge. This can affect us in minor ways with just a headache, for example, or we could develop worse conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or even mental disease. All this mental stress is caused by emotional drain. What can we do to keep our emotional state healthy? We can follow the Formula for Emotional Health: Knowledge – Fear = Freedom The more knowledge we have about the causes and cures for disease, the more stable our emotional health will be. When there is a lack of knowledge, doubt sets in. Any combination of confusion or doubt in any area of life will stress the body and can affect us on a physical level. The paradox of choice is when we have too many choices. Many people are exhausted and lazy, due to poor dietary habits, and when they have too many choices, instead of making a wise choice, they make an easier choice, choosing what’s popular. But what’s popular is not always right, and what’s right is not always popular. What are the sources of all these excessive choices? There are many, but I think the more media we let into our lives, the more information and the more choices we are exposed to. From my research, I can see there is a common cause of many emotional illnesses in many people’s lives today, and it’s scary that many are addicted to this cause: television programming. There is a reason why it’s called “programming.” Most of the shows on television today overload us with information. When the same information is seen and heard a few times, even it it’s not true, people begin to accept it as truth. Many television shows are misleading, presenting a grim, slanted view of reality, the commercials trick us, the news makes us live in fear. TV-watching has many confirmed ill effects. As a result, I think the best way one can achieve the formula for emotional health is to: * Stop watching television programming, and * Avoid the news. But, wait a minute: Don’t we need to know the news to be well-informed citizens? It is my opinion that, if something is going to happen that you’ll need to know about, someone will tell you soon enough. Many watch the news every day and night, filling their minds with fearful conditions and circumstances, and they worry, often without any basis in fact. My recommendations might seem extreme, but after a short break from television and the news, see how much better you feel. If, for some reason, you don’t want to stop watching TV or the news, I suggest DVD’s only, and for news perhaps listen to National Public Radio, which presents without that entertainment twist that gets to us emotionally. Plus, there are many positive news stories on NPR, something you don’t often see on the TV news. Try to take a media or TV fast a few days per week. If you feel you can’t get rid of it, or choose not to, at least cut down. Other than TV programming and the news, another common way we toy with our emotional health is by surrounding ourselves with negative people. The saying goes, “The people you spend most of your time with either become like you, or you become like them.” So, chances are, if you’re hanging out with negative people, their negative attitude will rub off on you. Try to spend time with people who are positive, upbeat, and optimistic. These are just the beginning aspects of gaining emotional control. You either control your emotions, or your emotions control you. From an emotional standpoint, people often overeat on low-quality foods because they’re used to so-called “comfort foods.” These are foods people run to when their emotions are out of control. “Emotional eating” often leads to binges of overeating that can become a serious health issue. Foods usually consumed when emotions run high are usually of poor quality, and that adds to the problem. Lastly, when we talk about our emotional state and health, there are many food disorders that may seem, on the surface, to be caused by diet, but the root cause may be emotional. In any stage of disease, you must explore both the emotional and spiritual components. They are as integral to health as the food you eat.

Great Soil=Great Health

I am really excited about the prospects of building my soil this year to be the kind that grows really nutritious and delicious organic produce and gorgeous flowers and plumpy fruit and berries. For a long time our son has been doing things that I thought were a little...hmm.... unusual. I realize now that he was just 'ahead of his time' (or, ahead of me, same diff?). I've gotten hold of this information on how to have the best soil structuring effect and all-round healthy plant feeding without having to invest in some expensive bins or 'tumblers'-- the stuff I thought I would need to buy to turn my "gravel pit yard" (I'm not kidding) into a garden. No Bleach Here, Thanks

Common Names: chloramine, sodium hypochlorite, bleach, hydrochloric acid, trihalomethanes, disinfection byproducts

Chlorine is a highly corrosive gas with a pungent odor that is derived from natural sources such as salt (sodium chloride) and produced in mass quantities for industrial use. Chlorine is a building block for PVC plastics (vinyl) and for numerous chemicals, including pesticides, refrigerants, anti-knock compounds, and antifreeze. Dissolved in liquid to form sodium hypochlorite, or bleach, it is widely used as a disinfectant, in bleaching, and to purify public water supplies. Another form, hydrochloric acid, may be used in some toilet bowl cleaners.

Household bleach is a weak sodium hypochlorite solution. Household bleach is the most common cleaner accidentally swallowed by children. Children can also be exposed to dangerous gases when cleaners containing bleach are mixed with other cleaning agents, such as ammonia.

Concern about chlorine exposure also arises from its ability to form more toxic byproducts. Chlorine reacts with organic matter in drinking water to produce trihalomethanes, which may cause cancer and possibly developmental effects. A recent study links children's exposure to one byproduct, nitrogen trichloride, in chlorinated indoor pools to asthma. Chlorine bleaching of paper and the manufacture and incineration of PVC plastic results in the formation of highly toxic dioxins and furans.

Naughty Nosh

Last night my dear husband came home with a 1/2 bar of chocolate (he had consumed the other half).  He handed it to me and waited for some endearisms to fall from my lips.  I dutifully took a bite and recoiled-- but inwardly, I don't want him to STOP bringing home chocolate (like he stopped bringing home flowers when I was negligent about making huge fusses).  This chocolate was BiTTER.  Ew.  Like chewing on a coffee bean.  Like accicentally taking a big ol' bite out of your mother's cooking chocolate (yes, my addiction started way back then).

Yes, yes, yes, I know that the darker the chocolate, the healthier, right?  This was dark and organic and about 90% cocoa.  As they say in the comics, p-tooey.  ychh.

So, he went to do his evening thing and I did my evening thing, and the chocolate sat unmolested in its wrapper for hours and hours... an unknown event in this house.

This afternoon I was feeling peckish, looking for something sweet, longing for some real chocolate, smooth and sweet.  My eyes lit on my jar of raw Wildflower Honey, local ambrosia like no other honey you have ever tried (sorry, the "girls"-- what the beekeeper calls her bees-- will not be producing any more like it again until October).  Hmm.  And because my mind moves fast in such matters, I was suddenly grating (just like mom did with her Baker's Chocolate)the bitter bar into a bowl.  Then I took a large tablespoonful (okay, I didn't measure-- could have been two) of honey and mixed them together.  Now, that was more like it.  I also stirred in a little organic peanut butter (about 1/2 teaspoon) and a 1/2 teaspoon of sunflower seeds.

Totally satisfying, delicious, sweet, and probably extremely healthy.

Tips for Energy Without Limits

Energy Without Limits *Daily Health & Success Tips* (by Frederic Patenaude) My tip for you is one that I've recently implemented with much more diligence in my life, and seen a huge difference in the way I feel: "Exercise Before Every Meal" It's amazing once you realize how much exercise is related to nutrition and digestion! In other words, exercise improves every aspect of your assimilation, including: - The ability to process sugar efficiently (called "insulin sensitivity") - More efficient digestion and uptake of nutrients - More natural hunger, more desire to eat natural foods. The natural pattern is simple... you have to create "demand". You have to empty your fuel tank before you fill it again. You have to lower a bit your blood sugar before rising it again... other wise you're just filling up an already full tank! The way to do that is to exercise before every meal. It doesn't have to be a big deal. This morning, I walked to the grocery store and back, to get some fruit for breakfast. I happen to live where there's a lot of hills, so just doing that is a mini-workout in itself. If you don't have "time" to exercise, at least spend 2-3 minutes doing some jumping jacks, before you start putting foods in your body. Make it a commitment to exercise every day, and you'll be surprised be how great you feel! Also, plan your main workout of the day before a meal, and do some "mini-workouts" before your other meals. Your "mini-workouts" could be: - Going for a walk - Going for a sprint-run - Doing some bodyweight exercises, such as pushups and squats - Jumping on your mini trampoline - Etc. Get the blood moving!
